Hardware and software for 3D vision and robot vision

3D machine vision is considered to be the future of robot vision. The integration of 3D data makes it possible to precisely capture and interpret the environment, enabling tasks in robot technology to be solved more efficiently. This applies both to demanding assembly processes, such as gluing or welding, and to the notoriously tricky process of "bin picking". With the Ensenso 3D cameras, IDS offers a solution for 3D image processing that is not only impressive in terms of precision, but also in terms of cost-effectiveness and speed.

Our Ensenso 3D cameras for industrial automation

3D vision redefined: Automate fast, easily and precisely with Ensenso 3D cameras. You can also benefit from the Ensenso SDK, our software solution for seamless integration of 3D cameras.

Ensenso N, X and XR cameras work according to the active stereo vision principle. Supported by a powerful projector, high-contrast textures are projected onto the object to be imaged, creating even more detailed 3D point clouds even at long distances.

The Ensenso C series also works on the principle of active stereo vision. Additional 2D colour information from the RGB sensor of the C series provides 3D point clouds with coloured texture and realistic 3D images. The colour data enables further processing steps in subsequent processes, such as the differentiation or sorting of coloured objects.

The Ensenso S series uses an alternative 3D method with structured laser light, which enables a more cost-efficient and compact design of the 3D cameras. This allows the advantages of three-dimensional object information to finally be used in price-sensitive, high-volume projects, where the highest accuracy of Ensenso Stereo Vision models is often not required.

Robot Vision

Our compact 3D cameras can be used in a variety of ways for robot applications in factory automation and logistics. For example, they support de-(palletising), conveyor belt loading, bin picking during loading and unloading of trucks, in worker assistance systems or in weld seam or adhesive bead inspection. Hand-eye calibration for robots is integrated in the Ensenso SDK. The use of CAD data helps to localise objects precisely. At the same time, knowledge of the position of objects and obstacles enables fast gripping movements through complete motion planning.

Medical equipment

Ensenso 3D cameras are used, for example, for precise patient positioning during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and computer tomography (CT) examinations or radiotherapy. 3D image processing also helps in orthopaedic applications and services, e.g. for measuring feet to produce custom-fit insoles and splints or for precise measurement of the back.

Object detection and classification

Ensenso 3D cameras enable precise classification and counting of objects. Identification is further optimised by additional colour information. Another application is the sorting out of defective parts based on detected size deviations. In addition, fast volume determination enables efficient size classification. This versatile technology is used in order picking and quality control.
