With IDS NXT we have created a compact embedded vision platform for industrial applications. The philosophy behind this marks a paradigm shift: Our goal is no longer to simply develop pure image providers in the form of industrial cameras, but to offer easy-to-use yet flexible systems that can be used to implement all steps of a vision solution, from image acquisition, image analysis and processing to the control of industrial production machines.
By performing image processing tasks directly at the image source, IDS NXT cameras can autonomously generate results independent of a PC to directly trigger subsequent processes - this simplifies and accelerates workflows, ensures a lower network load and reduces energy consumption. With a REST (Representational State Transfer) web service and the OPC UA industrial protocol, they offer standardized, platform-independent interfaces that allow easy networking with other device classes without additional software or gateways. As autonomously operating vision sensors, IDS NXT cameras can therefore be ideally used in IoT (Internet of Things) as well as IIoT (Industrial Internet of Things) to support factory automation.
The IDS NXT platform is constantly evolving. Through software updates, we continuously supplement the capabilities of the embedded vision platform and the all-in-one inference camera package IDS NXT ocean.

Artificial intelligence for industrial cameras
Artificial intelligence (AI) opens up new fields of application for camera technology and image processing. It makes it possible to solve tasks in which classic, rule-based image processing reaches its limits. With the easy to use ALL-in-ONE inference camera package IDS NXT ocean, anyone - even without programming experience - can create fully autonomous inference cameras that perform completely individual machine vision tasks. And with the help of the cloud software IDS NXT lighthouse, even laypersons without any prior knowledge of artificial intelligence can train an AI classifier with their own image data, which is immediately executable on IDS NXT cameras. Users only need the knowledge about their images and their evaluation.
Hardware, software, infrastructure, knowledge and support are optimally coordinated and come from one source. IDS has developed both the training software for neural networks and the powerful AI core ("deep ocean core"; FPGA technology that executes neural networks hardware-accelerated) for IDS NXT cameras.
With the IDS NXT ocean Creative Kit, customers receive all the necessary components to start implementing their own AI applications immediately. This makes the entry into deep learning based image processing particularly easy.

Vision App-based image processing
The functions of classic vision sensors are usually narrowly defined and hardly expandable. IDS NXT shows that it works differently. Vision Apps are a key component: they allow image processing tasks on IDS NXT cameras to be used and changed as easily as apps on a smartphone.
With the pre-installed Vision Apps "Classifier" and "Object Detector" you can perform many different image analyses by means of individually trained neural networks, no matter whether you want to classify one or several image contents or find known objects. With IDS NXT ocean and the intuitively operated web application IDS NXT lighthouse, this is particularly easy and convenient.
The app-based approach creates universal application possibilities in numerous fields of application, for example in monitoring tasks using face recognition, for quality assurance in sorting plants or to support incoming and outgoing goods inspection. The application scenarios are virtually unlimited.

Open system for individual AI tasks
You would like to implement your own image processing sequences or combine classification or object recognition with classical image processing tasks? No problem. Developers, image processors and AI specialists can use the IDS NXT Vision App Creator to delve even deeper into the IDS NXT system and develop their own vision apps. This allows you to design the cameras individually according to your own requirements. Artificial intelligence in factory automation
Thanks to OPC UA, IDS NXT cameras can communicate with machines and controllers in the same language to exchange tasks and results immediately. The use of key technology allows the intelligent cameras to be integrated directly into factory automation without the need for additional hardware or programming.
The standardized industrial protocol thus creates the basis for "plug and produce" with IDS NXT industrial cameras. This means that the time from commissioning to productive use in industrial applications is reduced to a minimum.
