IDS case study: AI-powered potato sorting
Potato harvest: Agritech startup automates quality inspection and sorting
Rising quality requirements, cost pressure, labour shortages. For Munich-based agritech startup Karevo GmbH, these challenges drive the need for more efficient potato and onion sorting. With its AI-powered DUO85 sorting system, the company automates quality inspection and makes advanced machine vision economically viable for family farms and direct marketers.
The system uses between two and eight GigE Vision cameras from the IDS uEye FA range. Capturing every potato from all angles, the cameras provide a complete 360° surface view. AI analyses size, shape and defects in real time, while the robust camera design ensures reliable operation in demanding agricultural environments.
The result: consistent sorting quality, reduced manual labour and throughput rates of up to five tonnes per hour. Farmers benefit from stable product quality and more efficient harvesting operations.
